Turn On
Directed by Ben Clements
Production Design: Jennifer Redman
Turn On is a short film inspired by French New Wave director Francois Truffaut’s saying "In love, women are professionals, men are just amateurs" Set in and around Hull, It’s a close look at what goes on behind the closed doors of even the most average of Joes, but appearances can be deceptive.
My role on this project included designing and dressing two sets and scouting all four of the exterior locations used. The sets I made under the direction of Ben Clements were a staffroom for an industrial factory and a couples bedroom. The two sets had completely different atmospheres from one and another, which meant I had more freedom over what I could do with each set.
For me the most interesting bit of this project was thinking about the characters and what the various props and settings would say about them. For example the staff room was a male dominated area where women had never set foot. The lockers are personalised with page 3, sport and cars. The table is overrun with last weeks lunch take out boxes, coffee mugs and used tea bags on old tea spoons. The bedroom however has a cosier warm feel, with the concept that all the furniture has been passed down through the generations. The dresser where the main character spends her time getting ready for the night is overflowing with little luxuries she has treated herself to in order to make herself feel special. I also had the chance to design a poster for the room that featured the Truffaut quote that inspired the film.
